Exhibition Overview
The Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong proudly presents "Ink and Sentiment: In Memory of Professor Li Han-zhen," an exhibition dedicated to the late Honorary Fellow of CUHK, Professor Li Han-zhen (1938–2025). Professor Li was not only an esteemed educator and connoisseur but also a steadfast patron of the arts through the "Qiaohui Art and Cultural Development Fund." His support for the "Qiaohui Art and Cultural Programme" across CUHK colleges has significantly enriched the campus's artistic landscape. This exhibition serves as a tribute to his legacy and his lifelong commitment to the research, preservation, and promotion of Chinese painting and calligraphy.
Highlights
The exhibition features a curated selection of 60 masterpieces from Professor Li's extensive collection, following his generous donation of over 160 modern paintings and calligraphy pieces to the Art Museum in 2013. The exhibition is organized into four thematic sections:
- Philosophy of Ink and Color: Exploring the evolving dynamics of color and wash.
- Power of Lines: Highlighting the emotional intensity and strength of brushwork.
- Use of Negative Space: Analyzing the philosophical concept of 'emptiness' in composition.
- Imagery in Chinese Art: Examining the expressive power and symbolism in modern Chinese art.
Beyond their aesthetic value, these works serve as crucial educational resources, having inspired many students in their study of lithography, painting, and sculpture. The exhibit showcases legendary artists such as Qi Baishi, Pu Xinyu, Wu Hufan, Huang Miaozi, Li Keran, Song Wenzhi, Fu Ershi, Zhou Sicong, Wang Mingming, and Song Yulin, alongside newly donated ink works by Liu Guosong.
Visiting Information
The exhibition is held at Gallery III of the Art Museum, CUHK. Admission is free, and we welcome all members of the public, students, and art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in this tribute to Professor Li's profound contribution to the arts at CUHK and beyond.
