Highlights

As a cornerstone of the Chinese Culture Festival 2026, the Jincheng Shangdang Bangzi Opera Theatre from Shanxi makes its grand Hong Kong debut. Shangdang Bangzi, one of the four prominent Bangzi styles of Shanxi, originated in the rugged peaks of the Taihang Mountains, a region known as the "Party of Heaven" (與天為黨). This art form is distinguished by its fervent, soaring vocal style and grand, resonant musical composition, deeply rooted in the tenacious and passionate spirit of the region.

Program Overview

The troupe brings an exquisite repertoire to the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre:

  • August 14 (Fri) 19:30: The Feast at the Three Passes. This performance offers a profound exploration of She Taijun’s tragic, heroic decision-making as she balances duty to country against the personal toll of war, showcasing the powerful dramatic tradition of the troupe.
  • August 15 (Sat) 19:30: A special showcase of selected excerpts including The Palace of Wind and Rain and Killing the Wife, both led by Plum Blossom Award-winner Chen Suqin, along with Yanmen Pass: Stabbing Zong and The Great Battle. These scenes delve into the depths of human sorrow and familial love, capturing the indomitable, loyal spirit of the Yang family.

The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes (including a 15-minute interval) and includes Chinese and English subtitles to ensure an immersive experience for all audiences.
