Program

Nanhai Shisang Lang is a theatrical exploration of the life of Jiang Yuliao, a legendary playwright from the early 20th century, presented by the Spring-Time Experimental Theatre. The play chronicles the rise and fall of this brilliant yet eccentric figure, who was known as the 13th son of the Taishi-gong in the late Qing dynasty. Renowned for his extraordinary talent—reportedly capable of writing four scripts simultaneously—Jiang's personality was as sharp and uncompromising as his writing.

The narrative delves into his complex relationships with friends, family, and iconic figures like Xue Juexian and his apprentice Tang Disheng. It also touches upon the deep, unrequited love that haunted him for decades. Refusing to compromise with reality, Jiang lived a life of highs and lows, eventually fading into obscurity and perceived madness. This production invites the audience to reflect on the fragility of genius and the personal costs of artistic integrity.
