Chinese Opera Film Appreciation [Chinese Culture Festival 2026]

Highlights

As part of the "Chinese Culture Festival 2026," this "Chinese Opera Film Appreciation" series features 10 carefully selected classic opera films from the 1950s and 1960s. These works, set against the backdrop of the Sui and Tang dynasties or centering on heroic, righteous figures, offer audiences a chance to appreciate the traditional art of Chinese opera on the big screen, promoting the cultural heritage.

Program

The series is divided into "Cantonese Opera Films" and "Chinese Opera Films," hosted respectively at the Hong Kong Space Museum Lecture Hall and the Hong Kong Film Archive Cinema. The selection includes Cantonese opera classics starring renowned actors like Sun Ma Sze-tsang, Fung Wong-nui, Yam Kim-fai, and Yu Lai-zhen, as well as celebrated Beijing and Henan opera films featuring masters like Li Shaochun, Yuan Shihai, and Zhang Junqiu. Featured films include Wu Song Fights the Tiger, Fan Lihua, The Women Generals of the Yang Family, The Wild Boar Forest, and Qin Xianglian.

Performers

The screenings feature archival footage of legendary artists and screen stars, including:

• Cantonese Opera: Sun Ma Sze-tsang, Fung Wong-nui, Yam Kim-fai, Yu Lai-zhen, Lam Kar-sing, Yu So-chow, Mak Bing-wing, and more.
• Beijing/Henan Opera: Li Shaochun, Yuan Shihai, Du Jinfang, Zhang Junqiu, Ma Lianliang, Gai Jiaotian, Ma Jinfeng, and others.
