Overview

Hong Kong Repertory Theatre presents "Modern Wuxia: To Turn, To Be," a contemporary fairy tale for adults that doubles as an epic for the failures. The play follows a 53-year-old protagonist who makes the bold decision to quit his job and study martial arts on Songshan Mountain for three years. Upon returning to the bustling city of Hong Kong, he attempts to apply the code of chivalry to his daily life, only to find himself out of sync with modern times. In a concrete jungle, he uses French fries as throwing darts and cardboard as his bed, performing his own "world of martial arts" amidst mockery and exclusion. In this reality, there are no classic villains to defeat, only the suffocating pressure of life; yet, he remains steadfast, trying to carve a sliver of possibility for "chivalry" within the high walls of society.
