Program

"Myths, Monsters and Manga: The Art of Fantasy in Asia" offers an immersive journey through the evolution of fantasy in Asian visual culture. Spanning from the 19th century to the 21st, this exhibition examines how imaginative storytelling serves as a critical tool for artists to engage with complex socio-political realities and evolving contemporary experiences. It reveals the often-overlooked connections between various creative genres and styles throughout history.

Highlights

  • Four-Chapter Narrative: The exhibition traces the foundations of fantasy from pre-modern traditions such as Japanese ukiyo-e, Indonesian wayang (shadow puppetry), and Tibetan thangka paintings.
  • Historical Evolution: It tracks the development of surrealism across Asia and the rise of postwar Japanese manga and anime, highlighting their impact on modern artistic discourse.
  • Interdisciplinary Reach: Explore how fantasy-driven aesthetic sensibilities flow freely across boundaries, influencing fields including design, architecture, cinema, fashion, digital art, and video games in the 21st century.
