Overview

Hong Kong intangible cultural heritage inheritor Choi Tat-yiu presents his debut solo exhibition, "Inherited Art: Choi Tat-yiu's Solo Exhibition of 'Siu' Figurines," held at Tai Kwun in July 2026. This exhibition showcases the intricate craft of "Siu" (paper figurine) making—a traditional art form combining paper craft, sculpture, and embroidery, which was officially added to Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage list in 2014. Through meticulously crafted figures, the exhibition captures the essence of traditional festival culture and celebrates the artist's dedication to preserving this fading art.

Highlights

The exhibition features a stunning collection of handcrafted figurines by Choi Tat-yiu, ranging from majestic warriors and the goddess Tin Hau to iconic scenes from classic folklore such as "Journey to the West" and "Butterfly Lovers." Visitors can enjoy a variety of engaging cultural activities:

  • Documentary Premiere: An exclusive, in-depth look at the craftsmanship and historical significance behind the creation of these figurines.
  • Guided Tours: Insightful walkthroughs led by the artist himself (registration required).
  • Artist Dialogue: A unique opportunity to engage directly with the master craftsman regarding the preservation of traditional arts.
