Overview

Hong Kong Ballet presents its latest original production, "Dunhuang: In Search of Light," created by the acclaimed choreographers Hu Songwei and Mai Jingwen, known for their hit production "Butterfly Lovers." Inspired by the Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse’s timeless masterpiece, Siddhartha, this work masterfully blends the language of Western ballet with profound Eastern philosophy, taking audiences on a spiritual journey of self-discovery and life's truth.

Set against the majestic backdrop of the Silk Road, the story follows a seeker through a landscape of splendor, temptation, and the pain of departure. Guided by symbolic imagery—such as the Apsaras (Flying Deities), the Nine-Colored Deer, and the Water-Moon Guanyin—the protagonist learns to confront life's suffering, ultimately discovering the eternal light within their soul during this solitary pilgrimage. This production is commissioned by the Greater Bay Area International Theatre Festival and features support from the Dunhuang Academy to bring the essence of Dunhuang culture to the stage.
