An Exploration of Modernity and Decay
Ora-Ora is proud to present "Phantom Reality", the debut solo exhibition at the gallery for renowned contemporary artist Jiang Heng. Born in 1972 and based in Guangzhou, Jiang has spent decades documenting the rapid industrialization of Southern China. His work serves as a profound meditation on the collision between ephemeral consumer culture and deep-rooted traditional values. Visitors are invited to explore this exhibition at Tai Kwun, a cultural landmark in the heart of Central.
Thematic Depth
Jiang Heng's artistic practice is characterized by his unique ability to mirror the societal consequences of mass production. In "Phantom Reality," the artist focuses on two distinct series:
- "Wig Hair" (假髮絲): Vibrant, glossy paintings that depict hair not just as a physical object, but as a symbol of shifting social status and deep-seated historical significance, particularly referencing the Confucian concept of physical integrity from the Classic of Filial Piety.
- "I Divide My Body into Pixel Fragments and Give Them to You" (我把身体分成像素碎片分给你): A series of textured wood-based installations that visualize the fragmentation of the human experience in an increasingly digitized world.
Why This Exhibition Matters
As Ora-Ora's co-founder and CEO, Dr. Henrietta Tsui-Faucher, aptly notes, Jiang Heng possesses a keen insight into the tension between the "throwaway" nature of modern consumption and the ideals we once held sacred. By viewing these works, you are encouraged to question what remains significant when the glamour of the present fades.
