Highlights
This unique electronic arts workshop features master seal carver Ng Kam-chuen, who guides participants in blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary sound art. By constructing your own 'contact microphone' (contact mic), you will engage in an experimental exploration of the overlooked auditory details of the city. This experience goes beyond a simple DIY project; it is a profound reflection on the aesthetics of space and the philosophy of craft.
Program
Inspired by exercises from the 'SATA Summer Academy,' this session explores the concepts of 'positive' and 'negative' space. In seal carving, the carved character is the 'positive space,' while the stone shavings are the crucial 'negative space.' Though these shavings may seem useless, they are essential elements that complete the work. Mr. Ng Kam-chuen, from Pun Hin Shan Koon, is known for his incredible focus and the delicacy he brings to every cut. In this workshop, participants will learn to assemble simple electronic devices to capture the subtle, quiet sounds of the city—from the hum of street stalls to the delicate noise of stone carving itself—uncovering the hidden textures that give our city its character.

Our special guest is master artisan Ng Kam-chuen of Pun Hin Shan Koon, who will share his creative journey and artistic philosophy during the workshop.
Venue & Access
The workshop will take place at the Grand Millennium Plaza Memorial Garden (next to the pond) in Sheung Wan. Located in the heart of the Central & Western District, the venue is easily accessible by public transportation, providing an ideal atmosphere for this artistic dialogue.
Ticketing
This event is free to attend, though a deposit of HKD 50 is required upon registration. The deposit will be automatically refunded within 6 to 8 weeks following the conclusion of the event; please note that the deposit will not be refunded for those who are absent. This workshop is open to participants aged 12 and above. This program is part of 'SATA Extra: Exhibition + Arts Workshop.'
