This summer, L’ÉCOLE Jewelry Arts Institute presents its most significant Hong Kong exhibition to date: Precious Coral: From Curiosity to Treasures. Running from May 23, 2026, to October 11, 2026, this major cultural event invites visitors to explore the mysterious world of precious coral, a material that has fascinated humanity for millennia.
A Journey into the Deep
Held at the L’ÉCOLE Hong Kong campus in K11 MUSEA, the exhibition showcases approximately 120 rare items, including fine jewelry, sculptures, art objects, and natural specimens. Curated by experts including Olivier Segura, Mathilde Berger-Rondouin, and Rui Galopim de Carvalho, the exhibition examines coral through three distinct lenses: biological science, artistic craftsmanship, and jewelry history.
Why Precious Coral?
Often mistaken for minerals or plants, coral is a living marine organism. Unlike reef-building corals, precious corals thrive in deep, dark waters, far from sunlight. The exhibition highlights the rarity of Mediterranean red coral and Japanese red coral, prized for their dense structures and vibrant colors—ranging from delicate pink to deep, rich 'oxblood' red. Historically, these treasures traveled the Silk Road, finding their way into imperial collections as symbols of status and protection.
Exhibition Highlights
Visitors will admire pieces on loan from prestigious institutions and private collections, including the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection, Cartier, the Two Museums, and the Coral Museum. The curation creates a dialogue between nature and human creation, demonstrating how these 'treasures of the deep' have been transformed into wearable art.
Related Activities and Slots
We are pleased to introduce the Exhibition Guided Tours, an essential component for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the curated themes. Additionally, for collectors and enthusiasts, there is a dedicated Special Lecture Series scheduled throughout the exhibition, providing deeper dives into gemology.
