Highlights

This course explores the theory and practice of 'objects', 'materiality', and 'mixed media' in contemporary art. By guiding students through experimental creation, the course encourages a rethinking of the relationship between materials, forms, and concepts to help participants develop their unique artistic language. Emphasizing 'thinking through creation', this program is perfect for those looking to spark inspiration and deepen their understanding of the contemporary art context.

Program

Under the guidance of the instructor, participants will conduct community investigations, using street-level observations as a starting point to capture sensory associations with everyday objects. Through comparisons of Western and Eastern artists' works and literary depictions of objects, students will connect symbolism with visual imagery to initiate their creative journey. The class focuses on fluid dialogue and creative collision, assisting participants in building a visual diary and establishing long-term artistic habits from everyday inspirations.

Curriculum

  • Foundations & Conceptual Inspiration: Explore the meaning of objects and the transformation of materiality, from readymades to installation art.
  • Mixed Media Experiments: Review the evolution of mixed media from Dadaism to conceptual art; experiment with combining fiber, waste materials, organic matter, and technological media.
  • Space & Interaction: Discuss the dialogue between space, the audience, and objects in installation art, exploring 'genius loci' (the spirit of a place).
  • Community Art: Study local and international case studies to understand how people and objects intervene in communities.
  • Final Project: Create a mixed media work and participate in an internal exhibition with feedback sessions.
