Exploring Industrial Memory and Digital Evolution
Mok Hoi-ching, a rising Hong Kong ceramic artist, presents "Ceramic Form: Residual Posture" at the Pottery Club (本陶藝社) within the JCCAC (賽馬會創意藝術中心). This exhibition serves as a profound meditation on the intersection of ancient craft and future technology, specifically focusing on the concept of geological time applied to modern artifacts.
The Exhibition Concept
Using ceramic 3D printing, Mok transforms obsolete consumer electronics—such as remote controls, telephone handsets, and computer mice—into fossil-like structures. Through a process of scanning, printing, deforming, and firing, the artist mimics the way materials compress and mineralize over thousands of years. These everyday objects, which once acted as extensions of human senses, are now preserved as relics of a digital past.
The venue itself, formerly the Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate, provides the perfect backdrop. Once a hub for light industry, it grounds the exhibition in local memory, making the art feel like artifacts emerging from the building's own walls and floors. You are invited to experience a space that feels like a cross between a museum and an archaeological site, where some pieces are displayed as specimens while others remain embedded, reflecting the sedimentation of human history.
Artist Background
Mok Hoi-ching graduated from RMIT with a major in ceramics in 2021 and has since been recognized for his innovative approach to 3D-printed ceramics. A member of the Hong Kong Contemporary Ceramic Society, his work is defined by the fascination with how digital algorithms interact with natural, repetitive patterns. He seeks to redefine the role of the ceramicist in the digital age, bridge the gap between historical craft and future-facing AI.
