Overview

Mastering the core techniques of charcoal portrait drawing goes beyond simply drawing facial features; it is about understanding structure, controlling light and shadow, and capturing the essence of expression. This course includes live figure drawing sessions, allowing students to directly apply what they have learned and deepen their artistic skills.

Curriculum

This course is divided into eight sessions, guiding students step-by-step into the world of charcoal drawing:

  • Session 1: Introduction to Charcoal — Black, White, and Grey: Explore the tools and characteristics of charcoal, demonstrate line variations through different grips, and learn basic light and shadow principles to establish a foundation for volume.
  • Session 2: Facial Structure and Proportions: Understand the "Three Sections and Five Eyes" (三庭五眼) ratio, use geometric planes to locate the head, and practice rapid contouring.
  • Session 3: Eyes and Eyebrows: Analyze the structure of the eyes, highlights, and gaze, with demonstrations on representing the curvature of the eyeball and the depth of eyelashes.
  • Session 4: Nose and Mouth: Learn to sketch the structure of the nose and mouth, practicing contrast to shape the softness of lips.
  • Session 5: Ears and Hair: Simplify ear structures and master grouping hair strands while managing light and dark contrast.
  • Session 6: Integration and Shadow Control: Integrate facial features, practice blending techniques, and master the full process from draft to completion.
  • Session 7: Live Figure Sketching: Develop skills in capturing shapes and decision-making, focusing on expressions and atmosphere.
