Clay & Floral Craft: Japanese Minimalist Hand-building Pottery

Highlights

This course invites you to explore the world of "hand-building pottery," blending the elegance of natural flowers with the warmth of ceramics. Unlike mass-produced items, hand-built pottery emphasizes the direct connection between your hands and the clay, with each piece capturing the temperature and unique textures of the creative process. Under the guidance of instructor Lai Hoi-sin, participants will learn how to bring delicate floral textures to life and master painting and colored slip techniques to add rich layers of color, experiencing the therapeutic joy of creation.

Program

Over the course of five sessions, you will be introduced to the fundamental process of ceramic making, from shaping to surface decoration. Designed for beginners, this course does not require extensive artistic experience—only a passion for creation. Key highlights include:

• Hand-building Techniques: Mastering clay plasticity to shape minimalist yet stylish vessels or ornaments.
• Floral Detail Sculpting: Using tools and finger techniques to engrave delicate petal and foliage textures onto the ceramic surface.
• Slip Decoration and Painting: Learning to mix and apply colored slips to achieve a minimalist Japanese aesthetic.
• Firing Process: Understanding the transformative journey from raw clay to finished ceramic.

The workshop will be held on the 15/F of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Located in the heart of Wan Chai, the centre is a cultural landmark dedicated to promoting visual arts and creative industries, easily accessible by public transport.
