Overview

Resentment does not only exist in the afterlife. The unspoken grievances of today may already be casting shadows in the darkness. Japanese ghost legends are more than just horror stories—they are manifestations of unfulfilled promises, echoes of words left unsaid, and cultural codes woven from history and emotion.

This lecture series explores the world of Japanese ghosts through the lens of folklore (e.g., Yanagita Kunio), literature (e.g., Ugetsu Monogatari), art (e.g., Toriyama Sekien), and the Shinto concept of spirits. Each story provides a deep interpretation of life, regret, and reconciliation.

About the Speaker

This course is taught by Mr. Chan Chau, who has lived in Japan for 12 years. He was invited by the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong to serve as a guide for the "Yokai Parade" exhibition. He will guide participants through classic ghost stories, helping them experience the unique sorrow and lingering resonance of Japanese horror aesthetics.
