Under the Peak: The Cradle of Life at Western Street - Guided Tour x Book Launch

Program Overview

This guided tour features Mr. Yu Zhenyu, author of "Under the Peak" and founder of the "Hong Kong Old Photos" platform, leading participants into the historical depths of Sai Ying Pun. Using vintage maps as our guide, we will re-examine the streets we pass through daily and uncover forgotten details of the Western Mid-Levels' urban development.

In the early 20th century, the Hong Kong government promoted development through land leasing, encouraging Chinese leaders and religious organizations to push for public health and social services. Once a rugged terrain with ravines, Sai Ying Pun was leveled over time through construction. This tour explores how a stream beside the Rhenish Church Hong Kong once dictated urban planning, and how the establishment of the Sai Wan Disinfection Station (the center's current location) and the subsequent Tsan Yuk Hospital marked the milestone of medical services penetrating into the community.

• In the event of a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above, or a Red/Black Rainstorm Warning issued two hours before the event, the tour will be cancelled or rescheduled. The Centre will notify participants individually.
