Program

Invented by Leon Theremin in 1920, the Theremin is controlled by the performer's hand movements within the electromagnetic fields surrounding two metal antennas. This demonstration will cover:

• Technical Mastery: An explanation of how to manipulate electromagnetic fields to create musical precision.
• Cinematic Legacy: A deep dive into the instrument's historical impact on film scoring, featuring iconic soundtracks from The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), It Came from Outer Space (1953), and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! (1996).
• Composition: How to approach writing music for an instrument that requires no physical contact.

Performers

Guest performer and lecturer Miles Brown is a leading figure in the world of the Theremin. Having studied under the legendary Russian thereminist Lydia Kavina—who is a relative of the inventor Leon Theremin—Brown brings a direct lineage and profound technical knowledge to the stage. He bridges the gap between academic mastery and contemporary pop-culture relevance.
