Overview
"Hear Intangible Cultural Heritage" Chinese Music Demonstration and Lecture: Plucked Strings Duet is presented by the Rhythmic East Music Group. This program aims to promote the historical and artistic value of Chinese plucked-string instruments through live performance and scholarly demonstration.
The Pipa, often referred to as the "King of Chinese Plucked-String Instruments," was inscribed into the second batch of China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2008. The lecture will detail its fascinating history, from the introduction of the curved-neck Pipa (quxiang pipa) along the Silk Road to its fusion with the indigenous straight-neck instruments of the Qin and Han dynasties, eventually evolving into the modern Pipa we recognize today.
Highlights
This program serves as both a concert and an educational lecture, offering the audience a deep dive into the evolution of Chinese music:
- Historical Evolution of Pipa: Trace the origins of the Pipa and how it integrated with traditional Chinese instruments over centuries.
- Modern and Traditional Fusion: Explore the modern advancements in the Zhongruan and the enduring legacy of the Sanxian, an instrument that preserves the essence of ancient stringed percussion traditions.
- Commissioned Works: The program features new works by commissioned composers Chen Yawen, Liang Enting, and Zhong Ziyan, who weave together traditional motifs from Dunhuang and Nanyin Pipa with modern compositions, chronicling the evolutionary journey of these instruments.
