Highlights
Presented by Theatre Space, the musical "The Second Sex" is a new adaptation of the celebrated work by renowned playwright Zhao Lian. Set against the atmospheric backdrop of 1929 Paris, the production uses poignant melodies and vivid stage imagery to navigate the complex emotional struggles, jealousy, and philosophical dilemmas inherent in an open relationship.
Program
The narrative follows a couple who commit to an "absolute honesty" agreement within their open relationship. This rational pursuit of freedom quickly devolves into a source of inner conflict, as the protagonist, de Beauvoir, finds herself trapped in a cycle of jealousy and despair. Through these struggles, she pens the seminal work "The Second Sex," striving throughout her life to prove she is not merely "the other." The musical interrogates the classic assertion that "one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman," inviting the audience to reflect on contemporary themes of emotional attachment, intellectual autonomy, and the constant tension between freedom and constraint.

The production features a stellar creative team, including playwright Zhao Lian, composer Lau Wing-to, lyricist Cheung Fei-fan, director/producer Yu Chun-kau, vocal coach Mak Tsz-kwan, choreographer Yik Fung, and production management by True City Culture.
