Japanese Kanji Origin Workshop

Highlights

You might think you are familiar with these Kanji, but you may not know the stories behind them. Why does Japanese use the Chinese term 'tegami' (手紙) to refer to a 'letter'? Why has the character 'musume' (娘) transformed to mean daughter instead of mother? And why is the word 'benkyo' (勉強), written with these specific characters, used to mean 'study'? This workshop will lead you on a cross-millennial archaeological journey into the culture of Kanji.

Program Introduction

This is not an ordinary Japanese grammar class, but a deep-dive cultural exploration. The evolution of Kanji is a bridge connecting the history and culture of China and Japan. Teacher Chan Chau will deconstruct the origins and changes of Kanji in Japanese one by one, allowing participants to appreciate the profound cultural heritage while learning the language. This is not just a breakdown of words, but a deep dialogue on the development of Asian history and linguistics.

Performers

This workshop is hosted by 'Wa!CraftStudio' and features teacher Chan Chau as the guest speaker, who will lead students into the mysteries of Kanji.

The course consists of four sessions, designed to ensure quality interaction. Participants can choose to sign up for individual sessions or purchase the full 4-session package at a discounted rate. Due to the deep cultural analysis and discussion involved, participants must be at least 16 years old to register.
