Premier Performances Hong Kong proudly presents "Orlando Variations," an avant-garde musical journey that challenges the traditional concert format. Following a highly acclaimed Hong Kong debut in 2024, Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe makes a triumphant return, this time joined by the world-renowned mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska, marking her first appearance in the city. Both artists, recognized as former BBC New Generation Artists and recipients of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, bring their signature fearless spirit and artistic innovation to this unique production.

Program

Inspired by Virginia Woolf's fantastical novel Orlando, the program traces the protagonist's legendary journey across centuries and continents. The repertoire is a masterclass in musical versatility, weaving together works from the Renaissance master John Dowland to Romantic legends like Jules Massenet and Franz Schubert. The concert further traverses modern soundscapes, featuring compositions by Bob Dylan, Laurie Anderson, and Thomas Adès. The performance seamlessly blends acoustic and electric guitar soundscapes, creating an immersive, genre-defying experience that explores themes of courtly love, identity, and transformation.
