Highlights
Presented by the Rhythmic East Ensemble, this event offers a deep dive into the historical trajectory and aesthetics of Chinese music. Through a fusion of educational lecture and live demonstration, participants will not only "hear" the resonant sounds of intangible cultural heritage but also gain a profound understanding of the historical narratives behind these instruments. This is an ideal cultural gathering for those interested in traditional music, heritage studies, and the history of the Silk Road.
Program
Known as the "King of Chinese Plucked Instruments," the Pipa was officially inscribed into China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2008. This program explores the evolution of the Pipa, tracing its origins from its early prototypes during the Qin and Han dynasties, through the introduction of the curved-neck pipa via the Silk Road, to its eventual fusion with indigenous Chinese instruments. The demonstration will feature the Nanyin Pipa, Sanxian, and Zhongruan, accompanied by new works from commissioned composers. The performance bridges the musical spirits of the ancient Maritime and Land Silk Roads, illustrating how traditional instruments have evolved through time to create unique and modern acoustic characteristics.
