The Kai Fong Ferry Exhibition (街坊渡輪 Kai Fong Ferry 展覽) invites you to delve into the maritime heritage of Hong Kong. Rooted in the Lamma Island community at Sok Kwu Wan, this exhibition is timed with the traditional Tin Hau Festival, highlighting the vital role water transport has played in our city’s history. Before roads and bridges dominated urban planning, Kai Fong ferries (街渡) were the true lifelines, connecting rural villages and outlying islands. Through the historical lens of Chuen Kee Ferry (全記渡), which has served the region for over seven decades, visitors will explore how these vessels have shaped the movement of people and logistics.

Exhibition Highlights

This project, curated by Leung Po-shan and her dedicated team including Cheng Ka-chun, Tsau Cho-lam, Fung Ching-yiu, Hui Sum-yau, and Chan Sau-kei, offers a multi-sensory experience. The visual design is spearheaded by Tamsui, while the venue layout is crafted by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Architecture / Su Chang Design Research Lab. A key part of the display features a water-based experimental project that envisions the future of these island communities.

Don't miss the upcoming immersive session: 《島嶼研究001:街渡作為方法》. This half-day workshop, held on May 30, 2026, offers a unique opportunity to trace historical transit routes from Ap Lei Chau to Sok Kwu Wan, guided by experts Dr. Leung Po-shan and Jack Choi. Participants will engage in hands-on observation and collective creation, reconstructing the rhythm of island life.
