Exhibition Introduction
Galerie du Monde is proud to present 'Toil and Soil', a solo exhibition by Taiwanese artist Chiu Wei-Hsiang. This exhibition delves into the dialectics of 'loss' and 'grounding' within the artist's personal history. Born in 1997 in Dayuan, Taoyuan, Taiwan, Chiu's childhood memories were woven from fields of rice, soil, and the lively atmosphere of the market. However, the demolition caused by the Aerotropolis project led to the loss of his family home and subsequent displacement, an experience that became the cornerstone of his artistic practice.
Highlights
Chiu Wei-Hsiang's work is more than just painting; it is a spiritual practice encompassing life, memory, and labor. As a full-time caregiver, he navigates the repetitive and physically demanding nature of his work, forging deep emotional connections with the elderly he cares for. Observing the tenacious life force amidst fragility, he uses his brush to testify to the dignity and complexity of lives that are often invisible to the system. His unique creative process—painting directly from his imagination without preliminary sketches—reflects his intense urge to capture authentic moments while processing the psychological trauma of displacement.
About the Artist
For Chiu, painting is a method of 're-grounding' himself. In the gaps between his caregiving duties and creative output, he poses profound questions: 'When the land is expropriated, the family is dispersed, and labor is rendered invisible by the establishment, where can one’s roots take hold?' His paintings serve as records of silence, gazes, and concerns, functioning not only as personal psychological reflections but also as a gentle observation of marginalized groups in contemporary society.
