The "Hakka·At Home" Carnival invites you to explore the 300-year-old Lai Chi Wo village. Focusing on Hakka heritage and mindful living, the event offers a series of workshops, art exhibitions, markets, and performances that foster a deeper connection between people, nature, and the local village lifestyle. It is a unique opportunity to pause, breathe, and rediscover the true meaning of "home."
Highlights
The event blends traditional Hakka wisdom with modern eco-consciousness, featuring:
- Art & Craft Workshops: Engage in scarecrow weaving, patchwork, and a special cow dung art workshop led by HKBU artists-in-residence to experience the power of recycling and transformation.
- Gastronomy & Mindfulness: Try your hand at making traditional Hakka tea kueh, and participate in "Mindful Eating" and "Forest Bathing" sessions to immerse yourself in the healing power of nature.
- Sharing Sessions: Former Observatory Director Mr. Lam Chiu-ying, Village Head Mr. Tsang Wai-yip, and writer Ms. Ng Yin-ching will gather under the banyan tree to discuss the essence of home.
- Market & Interactive Stalls: Enjoy various booths featuring Hakka dialect learning, ecological puzzles, and herbal sachet crafting for a fun and educational experience.
Program Details
The carnival takes place in the open area in front of the East Gate of Lai Chi Wo Village, filled with cultural ambiance and artistic flair. In addition to the workshops, the day features busking performances by local musicians and interactive conservation-themed games. The organizers aim to reconnect the community with nature through these activities, showcasing the traditional and sustainable values of the village. We welcome everyone to experience the slow pace and unique charm of village life.
Ticketing & Notes
The entrance fee is HKD 50 (includes market vouchers, souvenirs, and a stamp card). Workshops and guided tours require separate registration and a deposit. Please note:
- Participants must arrange their own transport to Lai Chi Wo (ferries available from Ma Liu Shui or Sha Tau Kok; note that the Sha Tau Kok ferry requires a restricted area permit applied in advance).
- Present your confirmation QR code at the reception to redeem event materials.
- You are welcome to register for multiple activities; please check the schedule carefully to avoid overlapping.
