Highlights
The "HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform" aims to connect creative forces in the East Asian dance scene. "China Part III" presents four unique Korean contemporary dance works, bringing together four groups of outstanding choreographers and dancers. The performance traverses traditional roots, social inquiries, and future imaginations, showcasing the diverse facets of Korean contemporary dance that are both deeply grounded and avant-garde.
Program
The evening features four compelling works:
- Aura: Focusing on laborers who died in solitude, this work is an elegy for the departed. It mourns those whose lives were taken by cold, unfeeling machines or whose causes of death remain unknown, questioning the profound meaning of human existence and bringing forgotten lives back into view.
- Bride Mask: Inspired by the "Hahoe Mask Dance" ritual, this piece breathes life into traditional masks through the dancers' bodies, narrating stories of silence and oppression endured by generations of women. It transforms tradition into powerful physical language, allowing past memories to resurface.
- Are You Guilty?: Based on the psychological concept of the "Bystander Effect," three male dancers use minimal staging, physical movement, and sound to present the shifting power dynamics between perpetrators, victims, and bystanders, posing sharp questions about indifference and guilt.
- Dance into Trance: Inspired by Korea's tour bus dance culture, this piece invites audiences into a lively dance floor. In an age demanding efficiency and constant stimulation, it offers a "dopamine detox" through ritualistic dance, allowing audiences to set aside daily stresses and enter a state of ecstatic oblivion.
