Loching Lam “Soy Sola — I am alone & have a good soul” Rattan Art Exhibition

Introduction

Presented by Umami Culture Lab and the Hong Kong rattan brand Soy Sola, this exhibition marks the first solo showcase by founder Loching Lam. More than just a retrospective of her decade-long weaving career, this exhibition invites visitors into a dialogue about materials, identity, and memory. Loching Lam uses rattan as a metaphor for life, illustrating the process of drying, soaking, bending, and reshaping as a parallel to personal growth and resilience.

Highlights

The exhibition is curated into three interactive sections:

• A Decade of Rattan: A collection of signature works created since the artist returned from her apprenticeship in Kyoto, mapping the evolution of her brand and various creative collaborations.
• Crossover Illustrations: Featuring an artistic collaboration with local illustrator Furze Chan, this section reinterprets three-dimensional woven objects into two-dimensional visuals, offering a fresh perspective on the artist's craft.
• 'Rattan-fied' Daily Objects: An exploration of personal memory where everyday items—such as food, children's toys, and skincare containers—are wrapped in rattan, reflecting the fluid intersection of the artist's roles as a creator, mother, and founder.

Workshops

To allow visitors to experience the artistry firsthand, two Rattan Weaving Workshops will be hosted by Loching Lam:

• Dates: October 24 and October 28, 2026
• Fee: HKD 450
• Experience: Participants will learn fundamental weaving techniques while gaining insight into the artist's personal journey and her creative philosophy.

Venue & Access

The exhibition is hosted at Foo Tak Building in Wan Chai, a renowned hub for arts and culture in Hong Kong. We recommend taking the tram to the Wan Chai stop or travelling by MTR, followed by a short walk to the venue.
