Overview

During major religious festivals and Jiao festivals in Hong Kong, the magnificent bamboo theatre structures are always a sight to behold, showcasing both traditional architectural wisdom and an essential part of Hong Kong's cultural landscape. As part of the "Sun and Moon Harmony: Kat O Jiao Festival Art Tour," this sharing session invites veteran bamboo theatre master Mr. Chan Yuk-kwong to the Kat O Bamboo Theatre to unveil the secrets behind this traditional craft.

Highlights

In this sharing session, Master Chan Yuk-kwong will provide an in-depth look at every stage of bamboo theatre construction, focusing on the critical material of this technique: "bamboo strips" (竹篾). Master Chan will explain and demonstrate how skilled hands weave bamboo branches and strips together to construct solid, grand, and resilient structures. This craft was inscribed onto the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong in 2017, representing not only architectural skill but also deep collective memories and traditional mechanical wisdom. Participants will have the chance to step into the theatre, experience the unique scent and light of the bamboo structure, and hear Master Chan's stories about these century-old artisanal techniques.
