About the Program

"The Chairs" (櫈櫈櫈櫈) is an adaptation of the 1952 absurdist classic by French playwright Eugène Ionesco. The play follows an elderly couple in their 90s living on an isolated island, who recount the same life story day after day. Despite their seclusion, they find themselves frantically busy as they prepare to host a houseful of invisible guests to listen to a "great lecture." This piece serves as a profound exploration of existentialism, isolation, and the void, infused with Ionesco's signature blend of absurdist humor and melancholia.

Highlights

Directed by Chan Shushei, this production features renowned actors Fung Luk-tak and Au Ka-man in a Cantonese-language performance. The show takes place at "Quarryside" in Quarry Bay, where the space has been reimagined to transcend the boundaries of a traditional proscenium stage. By integrating the audience into the performance space, the production transforms spectators into participants—becoming, in effect, one of the many "chairs" on stage.
