Program Overview

Shek Kip Mei serves as the cradle of Hong Kong's public housing development, witnessing decades of the city's transformation. As part of the "Muse Fest HK 2026", the Heritage of Mei Ho House presents "Beyond Half a Century: Shek Kip Mei Public Housing Design Walk," featuring a guided tour led by Dr. Wai Tsui-chi, an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Architecture.

This guided tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of public housing design in Hong Kong. From the austere design of the first resettlement blocks in the 1950s to the non-standard modern buildings of the new millennium, the unique urban landscape of Shek Kip Mei acts as a three-dimensional architectural textbook. Dr. Wai will not only dissect architectural aesthetics but also examine the relationship between community planning and residents' needs, exploring how early factory buildings provided employment for grassroots residents and how public amenities have evolved to meet societal demands. It is a valuable chance to re-examine the history of public housing and the community changes in Shek Kip Mei over the past fifty years.
