Highlights
This course explores the versatility of "water" across different artistic media, bridging the vibrancy and color-mixing techniques of Western watercolor with the fluid expressiveness and spatial concepts of Eastern ink painting. Participants will not only master fundamental color application but also learn how to utilize paper texture to create depth, resulting in evocative still lifes, florals, and landscapes.
Program
Drawing inspiration from the philosophy that one only needs to take a single ladle from the infinite river, this course examines the shared emphasis on water control and atmospheric expression in both watercolor and ink painting. The curriculum begins with wet-on-wet watercolor techniques, guiding students systematically through color tones, value contrast, color blending, and flat washing. Simultaneously, students will delve into traditional Chinese ink techniques, including rendering, "leaving blank" (negative space), and line work. Through guided exercises ranging from still life to abstract combinations, students will develop their own creative language.
Instructors
The course is led by experienced artist Szeto Chi-ming, who will provide demonstrations and personalized feedback to ensure participants effectively grasp the nuances of blending these two media. The instruction is conducted in Cantonese, with English provided for technical terms, making it accessible for beginners looking to broaden their artistic horizons.
