Whimsical Ideas: Object, Materiality, and Mixed Media

Highlights

Presented by the Hong Kong Arts Centre, this course investigates the theory and practice of "objects," "materiality," and "mixed media" in contemporary art. It emphasizes "thinking through creation," encouraging participants to re-examine the relationship between materials, forms, and concepts to develop their own artistic language. Participants will learn to capture everyday inspiration and develop a personal visual diary, fostering long-term creative habits.

Program

This 6-session course provides comprehensive insights and hands-on experience:

• Session 1: Fundamentals & Conceptual Inspiration — Exploring the significance of objects and the aesthetics of materiality (e.g., functional transformation, juxtaposition, texture, and weight).
• Session 2: History and Technical Experiments — Learning collage and mixed-media techniques, including community field trips and working with waste materials (paper, fabric, metal, etc.).
• Session 3: Space and Interaction — Examining materiality in installation art and the dynamic relationships between space, audience, and objects.
• Session 4: Objects in Community Art — Analyzing how people and objects engage with the community through specific art case studies.
• Sessions 5-6: From Experimentation to Completion — Creating finished mixed-media projects with peer and instructor feedback, culminating in a small internal exhibition.
