A Mind-Bending Exploration of Truth in the Social Media Era
Experience the gripping, brain-teasing black comedy 《真・Lie Show》 (Act Within), a compelling theatrical production that dives headfirst into the absurdity of the entertainment industry and the fragility of truth in our modern, hyper-connected world. Adapted from the original hit stage play Reality No-Show by the acclaimed Taiwanese playwright Tsai Pao-chang, this production features a Cantonese adaptation by director 李頊珩 (Hanks Lee).
The Story
When life itself becomes a performance, and performance is marketed as truth, what can we still believe? The plot follows James (played by 陳湛文 (Peter Chan)), a male actor who rises to fame playing a gay role in a popular sitcom, only to feel trapped by his public image. A confrontation on set with screenwriter Fu Ruoyan (played by 張毓軒) sends his career into a downward spiral. Things take a dark, cynical turn when he is accused of sexual assault by an employee after a heated altercation. As the video of their argument goes viral, the employee's popularity skyrockets, while James struggles to salvage his career. His agent, Maggie (played by 尹嘉裕), pushes him into a reality show hosted by Diva (played by 陳卉蕾), with Japanese actor Moriguchi Kazuma (played by 潘宗孝) added to the mix.
Parallel to this, the disillusioned screenwriter Fu Ruoyan finds inspiration for a new film after hearing the stories of Shao Chenye (played by 林子傑), recalling his youth (played by 蘇振維) and his mysterious connection to a man named Casper (played by 鄧永康). As these narratives intertwine, the play masterfully blurs the lines between reality and artifice, posing uncomfortable questions about the world of curated personas.
