"Out of the Ashes" Yejin Oh x Changyeol Gu Duo Exhibition

THE HARTZ PROJECT is proud to present "Out of the Ashes," a duo exhibition featuring Korean artists Yejin Oh and Changyeol Gu. This exhibition offers a journey into psychological reconstruction and soul-searching, exploring the profound transformation of life that follows the collapse of old worlds. Through a synthesis of evocative painting and abstract line work, the artists delve into the inner dialogue between anxiety, willpower, and resilience.

Artistic Vision

Yejin Oh incorporates her personal struggles with anxiety and obsessive thoughts into her paintings. She utilizes a recurring, deep blue palette to capture the tension between calmness and melancholy. When this internal blue clashes with the intensity of fire, a rose engulfed in flames emerges—serving as a metaphor for the critical point before destruction, where deep despair meets the quiet, persistent impulse for rebirth. Once the awakening arrives, life refuses to rot among the ruins, driven by an innate, powerful urge to continue.

Changyeol Gu moves beyond the literal forms of plants, distilling them into pure, outward-expanding lines and vibrant colors. His work represents a deep-seated, passionate desire for growth—an unnamed, mysterious willpower that crosses boundaries to invade, spread, and eventually take root upon the fragmented blue portraits and charred flowers. Together, the two artists create a convergence where one reconstructs life amidst the ruins, while the other allows life to grow wildly upon them, embodying the philosophy that after the ashes, life never looks back.
