Highlights

"The Youth of Fa-dan Ying - Romance in Shek Tong Tsui" is a captivating Cantonese opera. Narrated by "Fa-dan Ying" (played by Lai Yiu-wai), the story begins with an attempt to console his disheartened apprentice "Fa-lun" (played by Tam Wing-lun). Through his reminiscences, the audience is transported back to the 1920s in Shek Tong Tsui—a vibrant era filled with both glamour and poignant longing.

Program

The story unfolds in the Jinling Restaurant, where wealthy merchants gather to enjoy the company of renowned courtesans. "Rulyu" (played by Wong Kit-ching), a famous courtesan, crosses paths with "Xiao Sheng Ying" (Lai Yiu-wai) during a performance. Their mutual artistic appreciation blossoms into a deep, burgeoning romance. However, their relationship faces obstacles from wealthy suitors and opposition from the traditional authorities of the brothel.

Following the 1935 ban on prostitution, the two are separated. It isn't until 1939, during a charity performance aimed at supporting the anti-Japanese war effort, that they reunite. The tragic suicide of a fellow performer, "Hua Yan Ying" (played by King Fa-nui), eventually leads to a heartbreaking turn of events, testing the characters' resilience.
