A World of Gentle Radiance: Rucu's First Hong Kong Solo Exhibition
Quiet Gallery HK is proud to present "Buddha in Bloom," the debut solo exhibition in Hong Kong by the talented 12-year-old Japanese artist, Rucu. This exhibition invites visitors to step into a world where traditional spirituality meets the innocent, imaginative perspective of a young child, resulting in a display of art that is both refreshing and profoundly calming.
The Artist: Rucu
Rucu's journey as a "Buddha creator" began at the tender age of two when he was captivated by the statues at Sanjūsangendō in Kyoto. Since then, he has dedicated himself to the study and artistic interpretation of Buddha figures. His dedication is evident in his "One Buddha a Day" challenge, where he drew one Buddha figure daily for 365 consecutive days. Known for his trademark yellow spiral-hair cap, Rucu travels across Japan, drawing inspiration from different temples and statues to create his unique, modern world of Buddhas.
The Exhibition: Buddha in Bloom
In "Buddha in Bloom," Rucu reinterprets traditional Buddha figures by stripping away their typical solemnity and distance. Instead, he adorns them with soft, flowing lines and vibrant, optimistic colors. He expresses his vision clearly: "The world is full of chaos, and I hope to bring peace and make everyone smile through the heart of the Buddha and a bouquet of flowers—which represents love."
Many of his latest works feature smiling Buddhas holding blooming lotus flowers, often placed against backdrops of starry skies and vast cosmic expanses. This symbolic placement suggests that love and hope can transcend space and time, acting as a beam of light in the darkness to offer strength to every viewer.
Special Collaboration: "Tukou" Incense
Beyond his canvas, the exhibition highlights a special collaborative project. Rucu has teamed up with a professional incense maker (合香師) to create an exclusive "Tukou" (fragrant powder). This sensory experience is designed to let attendees not only "see" his art but also "breathe" it. By incorporating subtle, calming scents, visitors can better immerse themselves in the quiet, pure, and meditative state that inspired Rucu's paintings.
