Zhang Ying, the Pipa Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, will paint a musical feast that spans time and culture. The history of the Pipa itself is a tapestry of cultural integration; originating in Persia and entering the Central Plains via the Silk Road, its design blends the Western Oud with the Chinese Ruan, making it a 'hybrid' instrument of antiquity. Zhang Ying will guide this millennial instrument through past and present, exploring how to embrace change while holding onto cultural roots, reflecting the unique 'East meets West' spirit of Hong Kong.

The concert features a diverse selection of works showcasing the versatility of the Pipa:

• 'Spring and Autumn' by Tang Jianping: A piece deeply rooted in Confucian culture that portrays historical vicissitudes.
• 'Mulan' by Gu Guanren: Featuring virtuosic techniques to depict the spirit of the female warrior.
• 'Late Autumn' by Li Bochan: A piece using ethereal harmonics to paint a wash of autumn melancholy.
• 'Latin American Rhapsody' by Luk Wai-chun: A World Premiere blending Latin rhythmic pulses with the wild, new sounds of the Pipa.
