Course Introduction

By examining art works such as paintings, poetry, photography, and film, this course introduces major cultural theorists, with a focus on contemporary issues. The course emphasizes how cultural theory is embedded within art, rather than merely applying theory to art. Individuals without prior knowledge are also welcome.

Course Content

The course will cover four key topics: (1) Tangential Intimacy: Reading works by Leung Ping-kwan, Baudelaire, and Wong Kar-wai to discuss the tangential intimacy between art and cultural theory, and how to feel cultural theory within works of art. (2) "Les Meninas": Understanding how painting leads to theoretical thinking through Foucault's discussion of Velázquez's Las Meninas. (3) Scattered Art: Discussing how 'dispersion' enters the aesthetics of modernity, based on Hans Holbein the Younger's The Ambassadors and Ackbar Abbas's Cultural Studies in a Postculture. (4) Sensibility Critique: Concluding with Roland Barthes's Camera Lucida to discuss his concept of sensibility critique.
