HKRep Youth Troupe Annual Performance 2026: 'Puppet' & 'The Merchant of Veni-shrimp'

The HKRep Youth Troupe's annual theatrical showcase returns with two distinct, creatively adapted plays. Performed by talented youth members, this production displays the culmination of their year-long training and invites audiences to explore themes of control, manipulation, and artistic deconstruction.

Program Details

• 'Puppet': Based on Ibsen’s 'A Doll’s House'. The story follows a group of diverse individuals gathered in a 'doll house' by a mastermind to re-enact the classic play. As they confront the nature of human control and seek to escape the 'doll' dilemma, Nora's awakening serves as a profound inspiration for the experiment.
• 'The Merchant of Veni-shrimp': A humorous, restructured take on Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice'. Seen through the eyes of four market dwellers—Sa, Li, Lun, and Chun—the classic courtroom drama is deconstructed to offer a fresh perspective on contracts and humanity.

Creative Team

Presented by the HKRep Education Centre, the production features direction by Chow Chiu-lun and Leung Chi-chung, movement design by Chan Kin-man, set and costume design by Lai Lok-yi, and sound design by Leung Sze-wah.

'Youth Troupe Decoded' Secondary School Special

To encourage youth participation, a special package for secondary students is available, including:

• 'Play' Drama Workshop: Held on July 24, facilitated by Leung Chi-chung.
• Performance Ticket: For the opening show on August 8.

Venue: HKRep Black Box Theatre. Latecomers will only be admitted at an appropriate time during the performance.
