Program Introduction
Yueming Theatre Arts Group proudly presents the Cantonese opera classic 'Princess Changping,' written by the renowned playwright Tong Tik-sang. Through exquisite lyrics and melodies, this production revives the moving love story of Princess Changping of the late Ming Dynasty and her husband, Zhou Shixian, as they navigate the turmoil of a fallen empire. The performance is divided into seven segments: 'The Tree Vow,' 'The Fragrance Disaster,' 'The Flower Transfer,' 'The Nunnery Meeting and Recognition,' 'Welcoming the Phoenix,' 'Presenting the Memorial,' and 'The Fragrant Death.' Each scene captures the unique artistic charm and emotional intensity of Cantonese opera, immersing the audience in a profound blend of history and human emotion.
Performers
This production features a star-studded cast of veteran and emerging Cantonese opera artists. Li Shuzhen stars as Zhou Shixian, while the role of Princess Changping is shared by Xu Yueming, Tan Yuyan, Zhuo Xiaoli, and Wang Peisi across different scenes. Other notable roles include Liang Weikang as the Chongzhen Emperor/Qing Emperor, Fu Shuwang as Zhou Zhong, Li Yaowei as Zhou Baolun, and Chen Yuqing as Empress Zhou/Qin Daogu, among others.
