Highlights

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's passing, "The Night of the Ninth" recreates the legendary concert held on May 7, 1824, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna. This concert invites audiences on a journey back in time, exploring the final decade of the composer's life. Despite the challenges of hearing loss, deteriorating health, and political instability, Beethoven captured the spirit of humanity and joy in his final symphony, famously declaring that joy is a choice, regardless of one's circumstances.

Program

The concert follows the historical sequence of that fateful 1824 evening:

  • Beethoven: The Consecration of the House Overture, Op. 124
  • Beethoven: Missa Solemnis in D, Op. 123 (excerpts)
  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125: Finale

This program offers an immersive experience into the resilience and brilliance of Beethoven's later works.

Performers

Conducted by James Sherlock, the performance features soprano Gao Yi, mezzo-soprano Dandi, tenor Atkins, and bass William Thomas. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus and the HKU Chamber Choir will join forces, with Professor Choi serving as the guest speaker to guide the audience through this historic event.

Venue & Access

The concert will take place at the Grand Hall, Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre, The University of Hong Kong. The concert runs for approximately 2 hours, including an intermission, and is suitable for ages 6 and up.
