Highlights
Tai Kwun Contemporary cordially invites you to experience "Unboxing 2026: Locus Amoenus — Ryan Villamael." This is not merely a static exhibition, but a slowly evolving, participatory art project. Artist Ryan Villamael invites audiences into a dreamlike pastoral realm, transforming the gallery into a landscape of collective imagination through the collaborative creation of paper-art tree canopies. Through roaming and interaction, participants will gain a deep understanding of the connections between people and place, unraveling our collective narratives of environment and memory.
Program
"Locus Amoenus" is a Latin term for an idealized, dreamlike pastoral landscape—a place of refuge, fertility, and harmony. As part of Ryan Villamael’s ongoing series, this exhibition delves into the layers of history and collective memory. The venue is transformed into an immersive forest-like environment, where layers of paper-crafted branches and foliage form a shared landscape. Visitors are not just viewers, but active co-creators. You are invited to participate in workshops to craft your own clusters of leaves, vines, or abstract terrain, weaving them into the vast forest, reflecting each individual’s unique interpretation of a "Locus Amoenus."
Performers
This exhibition is curated and created by Filipino artist Ryan Villamael. Known for his intricate paper-cut work, he explores profound themes of sense of place, historical change, and human existence through his art.
