Highlights

As a breeding ground for budding theatrical talent, the SMILE™ Chung Ying Youth Theatre will present its 2026 graduation performance, "When the World Starts to Fade," in August. Featuring participants from both the secondary and primary school groups, this production utilizes theatre to explore the struggles of growing up, the choices involved in defining oneself, and reflections on time in our fast-paced society. This event is a showcase of youth creativity and invites the audience to re-examine modern values.

Program

This year's graduation performance consists of two compelling parts:

  • "Dear, Black" (Secondary Group): A story about departure and growth. John embarks on a journey in search of a utopia, only to find himself disillusioned by reality. When his idealized world feels out of reach, he is forced to ask: is conformity the only path to survival, or should one hold onto their true self? The play invites the audience into a profound questioning of survival, conformity, and authenticity.

  • "Momo" (Primary Group): An adaptation of the classic novel by Michael Ende (authorized by Bühnenverlag Weitendorf GmbH). The story centers on Momo, a girl with the unique ability to make people feel truly seen and heard. As a city is infiltrated by the mysterious "Grey Men," citizens begin to sacrifice "useless" activities like resting, conversing, and caring for others in a relentless pursuit of efficiency. Through a poignant lens, the play poses a crucial question: when life is constantly compressed for the sake of productivity, do we actually live better, or do we lose the very essence of life?

Performers & Production Team

The production is supported by a professional backstage team, including Artistic Director Cheung Ho-kin, Course Director Wong Chun-fai, and drama tutors/directors Yau Sui-man and Wong Hon-ching, who guide the students through their artistic development. Technical aspects are managed by set designer Lai Ngai-ting, lighting designer Yip Chun-lam, and sound designer Leung Sze-wah, ensuring a powerful theatrical experience.
