Course Overview

This course invites participants to journey into the profound world of traditional Chinese landscape painting, focusing on two pivotal eras in Chinese art history: the Song and Ming dynasties. While Song dynasty landscapes are renowned for their monumental grandeur and structural rigor, Ming dynasty works emphasize the scholar-painter's expressive brushwork and individual artistic voice. This curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to the historical evolution and aesthetic value of this art form.

Curriculum

Spanning 8 sessions, the course is structured to be progressive, guiding students from foundational concepts to advanced replication techniques:

• Sessions 1-2: Introduction to landscape painting, Song dynasty style, basic brushwork, and the study of trees and rocks.
• Sessions 3-4: Replication of Song masterpieces, focusing on sketching, cunfa application, and layering of colors.
• Sessions 5-6: Introduction to Ming dynasty landscapes, focusing on the specific brushwork of the era and rendering techniques.
• Sessions 7-8: Replication of Ming masterpieces, refining detailing and color usage, and discussing the evolution from Song to Ming styles.
