Gagosian Hong Kong is proud to host "Ain't Love a Something," the first solo exhibition in Asia by the renowned contemporary artist Stanley Whitney. This exhibition features a curation of recent and new works that translate the vibrant emotions of love into a visual symphony of color and structural grid work.
Program
The exhibition title is inspired by Duke Ellington's 1936 jazz classic, capturing the unpredictable, bittersweet, and joyful essence of falling in love. Whitney’s practice is profoundly rooted in the improvisational spirit of jazz, where he treats color and line like musical notes in a composition. His signature technique involves loose, rectangular grids that allow colors to "respond" to one another, creating a rhythmic visual experience.
Visitors will encounter key series that define his career, including:
- The "Rome" Series (2017–present): Marking a transformative period in the artist’s life in Italy, these works bridge ancient Mediterranean history with modern abstraction.
- The "Stay Singing" Series (2017–present): A testament to the lyrical potential of color, blending improvisational freedom with strict, geometric discipline.
- New Works: Including Summer of Ripe Joy (2024–26), Afternoon Poem (2026), and Between Midnight and Dawn (2026), which offer profound reflections on the passage of time and sensory memory.
Drawing from both the tradition of American Southern quilting and the heavy influence of Abstract Expressionist masters like Mark Rothko, Whitney’s compositions offer a deeply personal and soul-stirring journey for all viewers.
