"Mobile ICH" Public Education Activity: "Eight Treasures" Antimony Painting Bookmark Workshop
Hosted by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office and the Hong Kong Culture and Heritage Resources Centre during the 2026 Hungry Ghost Festival, this workshop allows participants to explore traditional "antimony painting" techniques and craft their own "Eight Treasures" bookmarks.

Highlights
The "Mobile ICH" vehicle returns to the Hungry Ghost Festival with an exciting new workshop. This session transforms the traditional Chaozhou paper-crafting technique of "antimony painting" into a modern artistic creation. It offers a unique opportunity for the public to experience this fading craft through simple tools, bypassing the complexity of large-scale paper crafting while keeping the auspicious traditions alive.
Program
Within the bamboo sheds of traditional Yu Lan festivals, the vibrant and eye-catching decorations found on god robes, the King of Ghosts (Da Shi Wang), and paper horses are prime examples of "antimony painting." Before the era of digital printing, these intricate lines and patterns were hand-drawn by masters using brushes. Over time, this craft has evolved from purely manual painting to a hybrid of printing and retouching, and eventually to modern digital production.
Multidisciplinary artist Tap Chan has drawn inspiration from Chaozhou paper crafting to design this workshop. By incorporating the "Eight Treasures"—symbols of auspiciousness and blessings in Chinese culture—participants will learn to use traditional decorative techniques to create their own "Eight Treasures" antimony painting bookmarks, bridging the gap between intangible cultural heritage and daily life.
Ticketing
- A deposit of HKD 50 is required to secure a place.
- The deposit will be fully refunded to the payment account within 6 to 8 weeks after the activity. No refund will be provided for no-shows.
Important Notes
- Duration: 1 hour
- Target Audience: Ages 8 and above (those under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and both must register).
- Capacity: 10 people per session.
- Participants are advised to arrive 10 minutes before the start time. Unfilled spots will be released to walk-ins if no-shows occur.
- In the event of Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above, or Red/Black Rainstorm Warning issued two hours before the event, the session will be postponed or cancelled.
- Photography and videography will take place during the event for archival and promotional purposes. If you do not wish to be recorded, please provide written notice before the event begins.
