White Background Red Letter Film Sign Workshop [Quarryside Festival 2026]

Overview

As part of the "Quarryside Festival 2026," this "White Background Red Letter Film Sign Workshop" takes you on a journey through Hong Kong’s iconic street signage culture. Historically, Hong Kong's streets were defined by these vibrant, hand-crafted signs—a testament to the symbiotic relationship between "calligraphy masters" (those who hand-painted the characters) and "sign makers" (those who fabricated the physical structures).

Highlights

• Traditional Craftsmanship: In this condensed 30-minute experience, discover the history, techniques, and artistry behind the traditional Hong Kong shop signs that defined our cityscape.
• Hands-on Experience: Assemble your own miniature "white background with red letters" acrylic sign, taking home a unique piece of tangible urban history.
• Preserving Memory: Curated in collaboration with the "Hong Kong Signboard Research Project," an organization dedicated to documenting and protecting local signage culture and the preservation of the "Li Hon" font style through exhibitions and workshops.
