Overview
Gardens have always been more than simple spaces for rest; throughout history, they have served as manifestations of political power, social hubs, and sanctuaries for intellectuals. The 'Garden Life: Artistic Gardens from East and West' exhibition invites visitors to embark on a cross-cultural journey that examines the art of building, traversing, and appreciating gardens. By presenting a selection of 106 artworks and artifacts sourced from the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Palace of Versailles, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the exhibition provides a comprehensive look at how diverse cultures have interpreted natural aesthetics from antiquity to the modern era.
Highlights
- Global Collaboration: This landmark exhibition marks the first time such prestigious collections from Beijing, Chicago, and Paris have been brought together in Hong Kong. Featured highlights include iconic works such as Claude Monet’s 'Water Lilies', Wen Zhengming’s elegant scrolls, and Zhang Daqian’s nature-inspired compositions.
- Cross-Cultural Aesthetics: Gain insights into the contrasting garden-building philosophies of figures like the Qing dynasty’s Emperor Qianlong and France’s King Louis XIV, exploring how monarchy and elite culture shaped natural landscapes.
- Immersive Art Experience: Through a rich display of ink wash paintings, oil on canvas, and historical artifacts, visitors are transported into a serene environment designed to inspire reflection and aesthetic appreciation.
