Presented by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the 'Heritage Highlights Tour' invites the public to delve deep into Tai O, experiencing the unique intangible cultural heritage of the fishing village. This cultural excursion focuses on the 'Dragon Boat Water Parade in Tai O,' which was inscribed onto the Third National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011.

Program

As one of Hong Kong's most iconic fishing villages, Tai O retains many customs and traditions related to the sea and the fishing industry. This tour, led by subject experts, will provide an on-site exploration of various intangible cultural heritage items, including:

  • Dragon Boat Water Parade in Tai O
  • Salted fish and shrimp paste/sauce production techniques
  • Fishing net weaving and stilt house (pang uk) architecture
  • Traditional celebrations including Yeung Hau Festival, Hung Shing Festival, Kwan Tai Festival, and the Cheung Lung She Earth God Festival.

Participants will gain insights into the daily lives and unique cultural resilience of the fishing communities in Hong Kong, experiencing the historical charm of Tai O amidst the city's transformation.

Guides

The tour is led by cultural and history experts Mr. Chan Tin-kuen and Mr. Ng Man-ching, who will provide professional insights into the cultural context of Tai O, guiding participants through this precious treasure trove of tradition within a modern metropolis.

Ticketing

Participation is free of charge, but advance registration is required. In the event of over-subscription, places will be allocated via a public ballot system.
